SIPA: lightweight cabin furniture by Standard and Plaat Detail
Standard and Plaat Detail developed SIPA to combine low weight, moisture resistance and practical furniture design for marine interiors.
SIPA is a lightweight furniture system developed jointly by Standard and Plaat Detail. It brings material development and furniture engineering together to address the demands of cabin interiors.
The challenge: weight and moisture
Marine furniture needs to make efficient use of space, withstand daily use and keep weight down. Moisture resistance is also important, particularly in bathroom units and other wet areas. These requirements need to be considered together when choosing materials and designing the furniture.
From material to furniture
Plaat Detail contributed its knowledge of panel materials, while Standard brought furniture development and manufacturing expertise. The collaboration resulted in a system with a recycled PET core, supported by engineering and testing.
SIPA properties and applications
According to Plaat Detail’s product information, SIPA is up to five times lighter than traditional particleboard and is described as 100% waterproof. Applications include cabin beds, wardrobes, shelving, bathroom cabinets and wall panels.
The wall panels are available in thicknesses of 20–100 mm, with different density options. The material and construction should be selected for the requirements of each project.

Reducing furniture weight can help reduce a vessel’s overall weight and fuel consumption. The effect depends on the vessel, the amount of furniture and how it is operated.
